What is your One Thing?
There was a movie from the 1990’s called City Slickers. Perhaps you saw it and remember how funny it was. The gist of the story is a man and his friends are having their ‘mid-life crises’ and go on a cattle drive. Even though it is a comedy, there are some serious parts. One of the serious scenes is when the man talks with the leader of the cattle drive. The leader tells the man nothing else matters except One Thing. When the man asks what is the One Thing, he is told that only he can find out. It is different for everyone.
Do you think that is true?
I think everyone’s One Thing should be the same. But I also think we have more than one One Thing. We have to prioritize our Things.
Our first One Thing should be our relationship with God, our Father and Creator. If we get that right, all other Things will fall into place. We can figure out after that what our other Things are in order of most importance to us. But even that can be challenging. Is it job, spouse, kids, friends, and in what order?
Again, I believe if we have our relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit first as our One Thing, all those others will be automatically in the order they are supposed to be.
I don’t think we ever arrive. We will never be perfect in keeping our Things in the order they are supposed to be. We have to keep struggling to have them in correct order.
That order may change on occasion, but keeping God as our most important One Thing is vital to having all the other Things in the correct order.
