I can remember going to the circus only once or twice in my lifetime. I don’t care for clowns, so it’s not my favorite place to be entertained.
When you’re at the circus, there’s a lot going on at one time. Animals, clowns, trapeze, and others are all going about the arena doing their things while the ring master talks up the crowd. It’s a lot to take in and can be mind overload!
There’s a line in the song by Toby Mac called “Lose My Soul” that says we are like a kid in a three ring circus. There’s so much going on in our lives, and we are surrounded by temptations that pull us every direction. In Mark 8 verse 36 Jesus said, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”
Like the song says, I don’t want to gain the whole world and lose my soul. Sometimes it feels like the ring master of this world is pointing at so many things at once telling us how important they are or how good they’ll be for us. He makes it seem like we’re missing out if we don’t look at that circus act or volunteer for this one. He makes a lot of noise, calling our attention.
But the One we need to listen to is not loud. He is calm, quietness in everyday things. He’s in the sunrise, the butterfly, the birds, the trees swaying in the breeze, the flowers, and the Christian next to you. I think that is why Jesus so often went away to be alone in the stillness of just being with God.
What does your circus look like today?
