I have a few things I really treasure…gifts given to me, heirlooms passed down, other things I love. I also have people I treasure…family and friends.
In John 12 Mary anoints Jesus’s feet with perfume considered her treasure because it was worth a year’s salary. After she puts it on His feet, she wipes them with her hair. Not something done back then as a woman’s hair was also considered her treasure, part of her beauty.
Like Mary, I believe sometimes we have to give up our treasures too. It may be worth a year’s salary, or it may be priceless.
There are a couple of different ways we do this. One is to physically give it away for whatever reason. The other is in some ways much more difficult.
Sometimes we have to give people over. We have to give them over to the choices they are making, to the life they are living. I don’t mean we give up on them. We give them up to God. We pray fervently for them, knowing we’ve done all we can and now it’s up to God.
This is one of the hardest things to do. But instead of it being the last thing we find ourselves doing, it should be the first thing!
Give it all up to God.
