One of my favorite movies is The Last of the Mohicans (1992). There is one scene where Cora and Hawkeye are able to steal away from the fighting. As they sit together looking over the fort where they see injury, hunger, burning, and pain, Cora says “The whole world’s on fire, isn’t it?”
Sometimes it feels that way when we watch the news. With the Coronavirus and rioting being all the news is about these days, it feels like the world is on fire.
We long for peace, comfort, and stability. But we live in a fallen world that will never be those things. We may have moments of peace when we can take a deep breath and relax, but most of the time we are in a fight. A fight against evil. A fight for our souls. A fight for each other.
We aren’t supposed to be comfortable yet. Deuteronomy 8 says when we get comfortable, we may forget God. And how true that is! I see it in my life and in the lives of those around me. I see it in our country. When we get comfortable, we become self-reliant (at least we think we are).
Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. 19 If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. 20 Like the nations the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.
Let’s remember to be careful. Don’t get comfortable. Remember on Whom we rely! Keep His commandments. Stay strong in Him. Keep the faith!
It is up to us as Christians, to stay strong and to point the way whether in our words or on social media or whatever way God opens up for us!
