I’m doing a devotional on Proverbs 31. Most of us know this chapter especially if you are a Christian woman. It is a lot to live up to, trying to be like this woman.
But one of the things in it hits me hard. It is verse 25. “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Can you honestly say you can laugh at the days to come? I cannot. If I sit and think about life, how I feel now, and how I think I’m going to feel in twenty years, I am not sure it’s going to be funny.
On the other hand, I think it might be a choice. Like waking up every morning and deciding to be happy. Looking at the future, knowing it is in God’s hands, should make us laugh with joy. No matter what happens in this life to my body, nothing can touch my soul because it belongs to God. That should make me laugh.
An old Yiddish proverb says, “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul.” Laughter is a cleansing. Don’t you just love to laugh a deep belly laugh that brings you to tears? I do!
If God doesn’t call me home soon, I want to be that old grandma that everyone loves, who has wisdom and a smile for all, and especially one who has so many wrinkles because I laughed my whole life!
