Would you want to go back in time to a certain moment and relive your life over again? I think about this sometimes. I don’t think I would unless I could carry what little wisdom I have gained back with me.
This world seems to be getting more evil each day. The Bible says there’s nothing new under the sun. Maybe there’s just more of it, and it is spread so widely through media.
This morning’s reading passage was from 1 Chronicle 21. Verse 15 says:
And God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, the Lord saw, and he relented from the calamity. And he said to the angel who was working destruction, “It is enough; now stay your hand.”
I wonder what God saw that made Him stop the angel. I wonder if God has ever done this in our time? He was doing this because David had ordered a census for the Israelites. That doesn’t seem like a bad thing to me, but God knew David’s heart. Just like He knows my heart. And your heart. And the heart of everyone.
Has God ever had one of His angels there with sword drawn ready to destroy Nashville, Tennessee, America, the world? Has He seen someone good and relented?
David was able to see that angel with its sword stretched over Jerusalem. Later in verse 21, it says the angel put his sword back into its sheath. What a frightening thing to have seen. I cannot wrap my human mind around a sword large enough to stretch out over a city.
But God can do anything!
He can even have patience with me, with you, and with this world.
But one day Jesus will come back in the clouds. There will be a loud cry. Perhaps that cry will be from God and He will say…
“It is Enough!!”
