There’s a sparrow that sometimes comes outside the patio door of our cabin on the farm in Columbia. First, I heard its beautiful singing, then, I finally saw it. It is beautiful. I wasn’t able to capture a picture of it as it was too quick, but it kept coming back.
I believe God puts His creation in our path. Whether it is a bird, other animal, or a person, He sends them along just when we need them. They remind us of who He is and that He is still present and in control. They are there when we need a reminder or a friend with an ear to listen or give a hug.
There’s a song by Jason Gray called “Sparrows” that I love. There are a couple of lines that I like. One says “If He can hold this world, He can hold this moment.” Think about that for a minute. If God can hold the whole world, the earth and everything in it and keep it going, He can certainly hold this moment when I am crying out to Him, failing and hurting, and especially the moment when I am praising His name! The other line I like is “Even the sparrow knows, He holds tomorrow.” We don’t need to worry about the future. God’s got it!
Jesus tells us in Luke 6 verses 6-7, 6 Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 In fact, even the hairs on your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows. (NET) And in Matthew 6, Jesus said, 6 Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are? We are more important than the birds, and God will provide for us! We are often told in the Bible not to be afraid. This is easier said than done especially when you’re right in the thick of it!
Look for God’s reminders every day all day. He is there gently nudging us to look, to not be afraid, to remember He is in control of the world and this moment.
And the sparrow knows it!
